Commitment: 8 hours a day for 11 full days, total 88 hours onsite + 12 hours preparation beforehand (personal preparation, meetings, etc.) = total 100 hours (Note: This role counts for EAP.)
Service during the entire retreat is highly preferred. However, if a commitment for the entire period is not possible, accommodations may be possible, but not guaranteed.
Responsibilities
- Preparing breakfast, a varied, nourishing lunch, and a light dinner for a group of retreatants at the size of around 15 – 20 persons during the event; and in addition, for the Kalapa staff and visitors (4-8 persons) on the days before and after the Retreat.

- Responsible for setting up the daily menu and preparing a shopping list (including calculating the quantities of each item) beforehand.
- Manage the onsite volunteer cook helper.
- Final deep cleaning of kitchen, washroom & dining hall after Retreat ended.
- Experienced cooks from past retreats can be contacted for additional exchange, if desired.
Skills & Qualifications
Cooking
- The most important qualification is your willingness to help the retreat in this role.
- Previous cooking experience for medium to large-size groups is not mandatory, but helpful.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate with other staff members and volunteers to fully support the retreat; ability to work in a team is essential.
- Good communication and organizational skills, diligence and flexibility.
Why This Role Is Important
The Volunteer will receive 3 meals/day and shared accommodation at Kalapa. You will be able to enjoy all the areas in the retreat center except for the spaces where the retreatants will practice. Unlike the retreatants, the external volunteers can access electronic devices, the internet, and so forth. If you commit to the whole volunteering period, during your stay, we can provide free access to an online course or recorded retreat at our digital learning center if you would like to support your practice and study while you are volunteering. Alternatively, if you have already received the 4 Higher Empowerments before, you can also participate in any practice sessions of the event for free, as long as you plan your breaks from your volunteer work accordingly.
