Volunteer for this Project

We have painting and renovation work within our Kalapa Care Weeks. We need your help as volunteer to paint rooms, furnishing and for many other activities.

SPONSOR NEW RETREAT ACCOMMODATIONS

Help Sustain a Blessed Place of Practice in Europe

Kalapa Retreat Center is entering a vital new phase of development. We are undertaking a necessary major renovation of our guest rooms, attic space, and fire safety infrastructure to ensure that Kalapa continues to grow as a deeply supportive environment for Dharma practice, study, service, and for visitors.

The attic space has previously been occupied during an earlier use of the building, when it served as a school and later as housing for refugees. There is already a permitted renovation plan in place for this huge space, providing a solid and approved foundation for the work ahead.

Currently, volunteer architects are actively updating these plans to better support Kalapa’s evolving retreat center mission. The revised design focuses most on single- and double-occupancy rooms suitable for dark retreats, long-term solitary practice, extended retreat stays, private visitors, long-term volunteers, while remaining fully compliant with the most updated safety and building regulations.

50,000 Euro Founding Sponsorship

Thanks to a very generous 50,000 donation from an anonymous benefactor of our community, along with the professional oversight of our volunteer architects and experts, this project is now prepared to move forward.

Your support will help bring it to completion. We do not yet have the full cost of all steps, but currently estimate we need at least 250,000 Euros or more to complete the whole attic project. An accurate estimate is under preparation.

What This Renovation Makes Possible

Purpose-Built Retreat Accommodations
The renovated attic and guest rooms will offer well-designed single and double rooms that support silence, darkness, and stability—essential conditions for dark retreats, long-term retreatants, or deep sādhana practices.

Expanded Use & Financial Sustainability
Improved accommodations increase the rentability of the center, allowing Kalapa to host more retreats, welcome visiting teachers, and be rented by aligned organizations. This supports both Dharma activity and long-term financial sustainability.

Fire Safety & Long-Term Viability
In order to extend capacity for more guests, Kalapa must meet specific fire safety requirements. These complex and detailed upgrades ensure the safety of residents and visitors while protecting the center’s ability to operate for decades to come.

Why This Matters

Kalapa is an exceptionally blessed and auspicious place in Europe, making profound Dharma teachings and retreat practices accessible to European and international practitioners. Completing this renovation allows Kalapa to move into its next phase of service—expanding facilities for deeper retreat practices, additional multi-purpose spaces, updated safety alignments, and broader access to authentic Dharma opportunities.

Timeline, Careful Planning, Trusted Execution

Kalapa’s leadership team and volunteer architects have successfully completed previous renovations through thoughtful budgeting, skilled oversight, and high-quality execution. This project continues that proven approach, grounded in responsibility, transparency, and dedicated service to the Dharma.

In 2025, the Dzokden Kalapa Board voted to prioritize this project in its annual plan.

  • A Project Manager was brought in to oversee and coordinate the plan for this project.
  • A high Initiation Donation was secured.
  • An updated timeline for the whole project is currently under preparation.

Donations are tax-deductible: If you pay taxes in Austria and provide us with your name and date of birth, this is done automatically by us. For international donors, Dzokden Kalapa can issue a donation receipt upon request. (Please check whether the donation is tax-deductible in your own country.)
